Northern Sweden just had its hottest day ever recorded in June
As Europe sizzled in a summer heatwave, one town recorded northern Sweden's hottest temperature in June since records began.
The mercury soared to 34C in Skellefteå – on the east coast of the Norrland region, some 700 kilometres north of Stockholm and 250 kilometres from the Finnish border – on Thursday, weather statistics show.
"It is the warmest temperature in June we have had since 1970 for the country as a whole, and it is the highest temperature ever recorded in northern Norrland in June," Moa Hallberg, meteorologist at Sweden's national weather agency SMHI, told the TT newswire.

In southern Norrland, the city of Gävle also broke a record with its hottest day in June since 1973: 30.6C.
And an island south-east of Stockholm, Gotska Sandön, also set a new record with only slightly more modest temperatures measuring up to 29.3C – the island's hottest day in June since 1917, according to SMHI.
If you're hoping for cooler days, you won't have to wait long.
Rain and thunderstorms moved in across Sweden in the early hours of Monday and temperatures of around 20C or even less were forecast for much of the country for the rest of the week.
There is currently a class-two warning (on a scale from one to three) for wildfires in place along the east coast and southern Sweden, and several regions have introduced bans on lighting fires, including barbecues. Keep up-to-date with the latest fire bans here.
